Safety first

  1. 1Test every smoke, heat and CO alarm, and check expiry dates.
  2. 2Check the gas safety and electrical inspection certificates are in date.
  3. 3Make sure stair gates, window restrictors and handrails are secure if fitted.

Kitchen and bathroom

  1. 1Reseal the bath, shower and kitchen worktop joints if they're discoloured.
  2. 2Fix dripping taps and check under-sink pipework for leaks.
  3. 3Check the washing machine and dishwasher hoses and connections.

Walls, doors and fixtures

  1. 1Fill and touch up holes from pictures, shelves and TV brackets.
  2. 2Make sure every door opens, closes and latches properly, and locks work.
  3. 3Replace blown bulbs and check light fittings and sockets.
  4. 4Tighten loose handles, curtain poles and blinds.

Keep a record

Photograph the property after the work is done and keep receipts. It makes the check-in inventory easier and helps if there's ever a deposit dispute. Repair obligations for private landlords are set out in the Repairing Standard — check mygov.scot for the latest requirements.
